My Story
Hi, I’m Kirsten, the artist behind Whimsy Bird Creative. The name comes from my lifelong love of birds—no matter where I’ve lived, they have always been a constant presence. I find something grounding and peaceful in observing them, and that sense of lightness, curiosity, and quiet freedom naturally connects with how I approach my work.
I’m a figurative and portrait artist with over 15 years of experience in painting and drawing, along with a professional background in visual design. I studied painting, drawing, and graphic design at Laguna College of Art and Design, where I focused on expressive figurative work and portraiture.
My work is inspired by figurative expressionism. While my subjects are recognizable, I am not a photorealistic painter and do not aim to simply replicate a photograph. Instead, I use color, brushwork, gesture, and composition to capture emotion, personality, and presence.
I’m drawn to the emotional side of portraiture—the small details in expression, movement, and body language that reveal who someone is beyond appearance. I primarily work in watercolor, exploring how the medium can create atmosphere, movement, and emotional depth.
While I continue to paint people, I’ve become especially drawn to animals and the unique relationships we share with them.
My interest in art began in childhood in Tucson, AZ, where I took one of my first painting classes at a small local gallery and painted a horse. Outside the studio, I’m usually spending time with my little “velcro” shadow pup, my husband, and family.
I invite you to explore my gallery and reach out if you’d like to create an expressive portrait that celebrates someone special.
